PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSISTANT
I suppose you’d call me a very enthusiastic amateur.
I’d stop short of calling myself a photographer, because right now I don’t make a living from photography. I don’t even have any qualifications. I didn’t spend thousands of pounds on a university education- I was too busy getting out there and learning the hard way.
I know the way around my camera like the back of my hand. I could geek out all day about it. But that’s a camera technician. Or a salesman.
I don’t want to be either of those things. I want to be a photographer.
I’m out there trying to get as much experience under my belt as possible, whether it’s on my own time or assisting other photographers on their shoots. I want to be a photographer, more than anything else- but I learned very quickly is that being a photographer requires a lot more than knowing how a camera works.
It requires enthusiasm, hard work, and a willingness to learn and put more time and effort in than the next guy or girl in line. It requires someone crazy enough to spend six hours on a mountainside in the rain, only to go home without unpacking a single item, then go do it all again the next day and hope for better weather.
I’ve got all of those things in spades, and I’ll put them to work like no-one else you know to get the experience I need. I’ll tell you right now, I don’t know everything. Someone will need to tell me those things I don’t know and can’t learn myself. What I can promise right now though, is that you’ll only need to tell me them once.
